  • Quick update spoke to hmrc, about voluntary ni  contributions class 2 , apparently can only pay class 2 for 2019/20 and 2020/21, apparently something too do with timeframe tho never explained what that meant just said it's the way things are, gave me an address to appeal, is it worth appealing or not?
I think your mean gave you an address to get you off the phone.

What are you "appealing" against?  Have you had some formal decision from HMRC that entitled you to appeal?
  • Nothing formal no, would like to know why I can't pay class 2 for the other years going back too 2006 they want class 3 for those years, but my earnings were exactly the same as the ones were I can pay class 2, doesn't make sense, and the agent never told me why really.

There is something that has been mentioned about once past retirement the six year rule applies to class 2.  The advisor would likely only have "computer says" information as to your query though. If you want to appeal you need to have a basis for that appeal and a legal basis for why you should be allowed to pay at class 2.  And the clock is ticking.

Also, you can't pay Class 2 for years 2015/16 and earlier unless you had made a Small Earnings Exception claim within time limits.  That means 2006/07 to 2015/16 (or was it 2014/15, I forget) would now only be payable at Class 3.  I can't remember the rules for the years 2016/17 (or 2015/16) to 2018/19 for those for whom those years are still open, though I think the Class 2 door is still open.

Class 3, it's "simples", any year back to 2006-07 is payable under the transitional rules.
Class 2, it's "complicated" with a myriad of different rules and regulations.
