I received a phone call from 03308182457 purporting to be MSE

On Sunday 17 August 2025 I went onto the MSE official website and completed the survey to get a comparison for Gas and Electricity.  The site came up with no offers currently available but someone from MSE will call you back.  I received a call on 19 August from 03308182457.  My Phone flagged this up as a Suspected Spam Call.  However, I answered the phone and they knew my name and that I had been onto the MSE Website and even my current provider.  When I asked who they were they said they were from Money Savings Expert.  I did not answer any of his questions and hung up.  Has anyone else had this experience and how could they get my details?

You were told to expect a call from MSE and were then surprised to get a call from MSE?

You've answered your own question, you entered your details on a MSE badged website, the website said they'd phone and you had a phone call from someone calling on behalf of MSE. It's the call you were expecting with them having got the details when you entered it into the MSE badged website.

MSE is owned by MoneySupermarket and offer some of their tools reskinned to MSE. Money Supermarket have built some tools for themselves and for other things they are bought someone else's service and reskinned it MSM and then re-reskinned it MSE too. Welcome to the complex web of businesses

I used to be employed by Kelly as a temporary employee, I worked in a BT Syncordia call centre (BT's outsourcing division at the time) and was telephoning Sky customers trying to sell them a Domestic & General warranty. Trying to answer who I worked for was confusing but it was Sky paying for us to do the job so the answer to people we were calling is that we were calling from/on behalf of Sky.

    Hi @greekladyold

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. This was not a genuine survey or phone call from MSE. MoneySavingExpert does not contact users through telephone calls. Refusing to answer their questions and hanging up was the correct thing to do. We recommend also blocking the number.

We'd ask that you contact our Customer Relations team via furtherhelp@moneysavingexpert.com so that they can investigate further.

Hmm. In which case what website was the OP on, if not the "MSE official website"?

Just to clarify on this, MSE's tools aren't re-skinned versions of MoneySuperMarket's tools. While the data feed underlying them might be similar (ie: current prices, providers' criteria etc), the front end of the tool will have been created by MSE to offer features that our users need or want, otherwise we would simply put a link to the MoneySuperMarket tool.

There are some tools on other sites - including MoneySuperMarket - that we link to where you may get a call (for example, from a broker if you're looking at life insurance or some types of finance), but there are no MSE tools where this happens and anyone calling and claiming they're from MSE isn't genuine.

@MSE_JC I am afraid you are wrong, probably not intentionally but you are not using independent tools from MSM

For the non-technological the screen when you click "get cheap quotes" tells you:

However despite what the screen states you will be going to MSM you actually go to https://car-compare-plus.moneysavingexpert.com/dialogue/carComparePlus/questions/your-car which is only branded MSE and per the link is on the MSE domain not the MSM domain

The data stream isnt "similar" it's the same hence we only had a contract with MSM and yet we appear on MSE too.

On the Energy Club page you state that MSM is your technology partner so clearly you are reusing their code, who gets a partner who's doing exactly what you want to do and then you develop your own solution totally independently of them? That would be a daft thing to do.

I have to say I dont know what would trigger someone to get no quotes on energy so can't replicate what the OP states happened. Whilst you say no one will ever phone on behalf of MSE you dont comment on why the website allegedly said someone would be phoning?

    Hi @MyRealNameToo,

My earlier post clarifies that MSE tools aren't simply 're-skinned' versions of MoneySuperMarket tools.

For instance, in the screenshot of MSE's Compare+ tool you provided, it says that "MoneySavingExpert will analyse your data". The car insurance comparison results you would receive would be the result of MSE analysis, not MoneySuperMarket.

We haven't commented on why the OP encountered a message about being called back by MSE because we don't yet have enough details about what happened, which is why we've asked them to contact our Customer Relations Team.

So we were both over simplified, you are reusing their technology but adding some changes to the results that come back, presumably the cash back consideration but its more than a simple reskining but isnt totally independent with only similar data flows (which would also be similar to confused.com etc)
