Self assessment

Hi :) New to the forum - don't know if this is the right board, but hoping someone can help...
I was trying to complete my wife's self assessment tax return today but couldn't get past section 3 - tailor your return - as a result of hmrc categorizing an old pension payment (sipp) as an employment. We found an old pension through the pension tracing service. My wife has been self employed since 2013. The first page of her self assessment today showed this pension payment but it was for viewing only - not able to amend or delete. It showed the pension payment and the fact that she was employed by the provider Aegon for 1 day! I rang hmrc but the person didn't know how to amend their records ... Any help would be greatly appreciated because until hmrc amend their records I can't complete the self assessment...

Did the person you spoke to agree to refer your issue to someone who could deal with it?  If not, that's presumably what you need to insist on....

They told me to ring hmrc online number when my wife gets home but not too confident this will help :)

Well, yes, if the issue is with your wife's SA then she'll need to be either making the call or (in real time) authorising you to speak to them on her behalf - not suggesting that it'll be a painless process but you really have no choice other than to get HMRC to act so it'll just be a case of gritting your teeth and getting on with it.

First, thanks for all the replies  :) rang hmrc and they said complete the self assessment as if my wife worked for Aegon (who payed out the pension payment)and self employed in the last tax year, even though she didn't work for Aegon...

Pension income and employment income both have the same tax rates so it isn't going to change the liability.

But you should add a white space note explaining the "employment" is in fact pension income.
