Hmrc

Hi  :)
New to the forum - don't know if this is the right board, but hope someone can help :(
I was trying to complete my wife's self assessment tax return today but couldn't get past section 3 - tailor your return - as a result of hmrc categorizing an old pension payment this year as an employment. We found old pensions through the pension tracing service. My wife has been self employed since 2013. Rang hmrc but the person I rang didn't know how to amend their records :( Any ideas would be greatly appreciated because unless hmrc amend their records I can't complete this year's self assessment...

Are you saying the form already has information on it before you start?  So when you get the question about whether you were employed it doesn't let you tick NO and the employment section is completed with the pension income figures?  That is a new one on me.  I know they may do it for the state pension but I didn't think they did it for other income.

This might do better on the Tax Cutting board but plenty of the same people come here as well.

Thanks for getting back to me :) Yes, the information is for viewing only - can't be deleted or amended  :( It was the first thing I saw upon starting my wife's self assessment...

I assume the same information can be viewed in her personal tax account (under the PAYE bit)?  I think there is tab you can use there to amend information about certain income (eg bank interest) and I wonder if that would allow you to edit the source of this income?

Otherwise maybe the issue is with the pension payer - perhaps they have reported the payment incorrectly to HMRC/  The personal tax account should show the details.

Are you worried that the payment will attract NICs if viewed as earned income?  The income tax will be the same either way.

It can be viewed in the hmrc app under Paye but not amended. Not worried about tax, I just can't complete the self assessment until this is sorted. Under section 3 tailor your return I tick the no box when asked were you an employee 2024/25 then it kicks me out when I try to move onto the next bit ..

Did your wife take the whole lot in one go as cash, or is this going to provide a regular annual income in future years?

Has she received either a P45 or a P60 from the pension scheme/provider?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

She took it all in one go and the company paying out taxed at source. No, no p45 or 60. They have reported it to hmrc as her working for them for one day .... I guess I'm going to be doing a lot of ringing around  :(

So, first, thanks for all the replies :) rang hmrc and they said complete the return as my wife having worked for Aegon AND self employed, even though she didn't work for Aegon...

Sounds like a fudge but may be OK as long as she doesn't need to worry about NICs.

Sounds like an instruction it would be best to get in writing if possible? In case somebody else at HMRC has a different opinion that costs you money.
