I have had no letters directly from HMRC as far as I'm aware, the first I knew about this was a letter from a collection agency (pastdue)molerat said:What a debt collector tells you and the truth are often far separated. As others have said you need to find out your true liability from HMRC - have you had any letters directly from them to you personally ?0 -

You need to answer the questions for people to help. You have a letter from the collections agency - is it addressed to you, or a company name?
Can you post a copy of the letter, with any personal information blanked out?
Based on a quick Google, Pastdue are a valid HMRC collections agency.0
