I've always put the slightly different dates occasionally down to the fact that I don't have a smart gas meter & I have maybe been a little slower in the day entering my gas reading. So far my electric readings have been on the same bill but that only started in March.  I wondered if some of the problem was to do with the amount ofgem are insisting they have as a "reserve" & I am sure Octopus didn't have enough.
If I carry on with the same DD I am on, I suspect by spring my DD will be 1p, but as I am new to solar I am not rocking the boat.  With a full year under my belt things could well change.
You could always change to monthly variable DD with Octopus (have to contact them to ask, can't be done online) and then you will only pay for what is owing on your account after each bill. If you're in credit, nothing is taken.

I moved to this option when my solar was installed in Mar 22, haven't paid an energy bill since. Each year I've expected to have to pay a bill in February but luckily had just enough credit until the solar picked up again in March.

I wish I could do that.  My usage is so high & my roof so small that it will never cover my full year usage.  I am however looking forward to seeing what I can achieve in winter by filling my batteries at cheap night rates.  I am even wondering about putting some in my batteries before the expensive afternoon rates when the time seems right.  It is all a massive learning curve right now.  I have a couple of friends who think I have lost the plot as I will be 80 next year, but I am looking forward to the day when I can say I have broken even.
