Probate - Council Not Issuing Final Council Tax Bill/Invoice

I'm the executor for my late father-in-law's estate. The probate process has been time-consuming but mostly without any major problems. The property has been sold and all bills paid with the exception of one. I cannot get any response from the Council for a final council tax bill. (I think we owe about 5-6 weeks of council tax after the 6-months' free period.) I am still trying "friendly" approaches as I have been chasing for "only" 5 weeks. However, if I don't get a response soon, can I issue some sort of final-demand for the council to provider an invoice/bill?
I kept the Council informed throughout the probate process, let them know of the completion date a couple of days before (the exact date was agreed very late) and confirmed the completion the following day with various follow-ups since then.

Have you provided them with the name / contact details of the purchaser ?
I think when I sold my late brothers flat they wanted details of who was taking over the property ....
  • Yes, I let the council know the names of the buyers/new occupiers shortly before the sale and then repeated the info in most of the follow-ups.

I assume you want to complete this so you can distribute the estate.  Is there any reason you can't hold back an amount, maybe equal to 3 or 6 months tax so the majority of the estate can be dealt with and then there's just a bit of a tidy up when things come through from the council?

  • Yes, I’ve distributed the bulk of the assets to the beneficiaries with some held in reserve. It is really just that it has felt like long process and I want to be able to close it down now.

as always, a good option for local issues such as this is an email to.your local councillor

Also have you called the council tax department if so, what did they say was the hold up?
