Cabot/ orbit

Hi new here !!! Hoping someone can help 
I had a letter last week for a debt from 2016 that was with Cabot financial I haven’t made any contact with them since November 2019 , the letter which is in my Maiden name from orbit I didn’t even read I threw away but I also received a text saying someone would call. Also , for clarification I don’t really remember this debt as back then I was in a bad way financially/ ill health and got help to sort my debts from step change  out and I am still currently paying them off by monthly installments. I only know the above information because that is what it says on my credit report this is the only debt reported on there. Anyway to cut a long story short orbit have called today I have two large breed dogs who where barking when the door went I answered I couldn’t really here what the guy said, I said yes then asked him who he was when I figured out who he was I said no one lives here by that name, and he said well why did you say yes and I said I couldn’t hear you because of the dogs and I am not prepared to give you anymore information. This full interaction is recorded on my camera , he wanted to give me a letter and I refused it he said I was being recorded to which I said so is he and then he left I don’t really know what to make of the interaction. Sorry for this long post as I have said I pay all my other debts, this is the only one I can think is linked to Cabot financial and thats  only because it’s still on my credit file which I looked at today , any help on what I should do ?  The debt itself is 760 pound.

Right, you need to be very careful here, as according to your dates, the debt will become statute barred shortly, or may already be.

When you say the last contact was November 2019, what do you mean by that, was it by phone/email/letter???

How you reply is quite important.

Orbit you can ignore, they are simply a debt collection company that specialises in knocking on doors, they will have been engaged by Cabot to tighten the screws on you a bit lol.

You did exactly the right thing, big noisy dogs means he won`t be back in a hurry either!!

Orbit them selves are toothless tigers, no authority or power whatsoever, they were simply engaged to get you to contact Cabot nothing more.

Hi thank you for your answer , I think it was by phone with Cabot but to be honest I do not remember. The only other information I have is what I can see on my credit file , I can’t tie it to any other debts as these are all paid monthly which I arranged with step change. At the time my mental health was awful and they helped me sort it out. I had never heard of orbit until last week.

If the entry is on your credit file, does it show a default date ?

If so, what is it?

The original date of credit agreement was 2016 and default date was 2019

It's gonna be statute barred 6 years after the default and also drop off your file

Verbal acknowledgements don't count and Orbit can be ignored.

You do have to watch out for a Letter Before Claim which would come in the post, though I can't see them doing a court claim for a £760 debt

Do not engage with anyone about this, especially not in writing, after November it will become statute barred.

Unless you live in Scotland, do you?

The limitation period north of the border is 5 years, rest of UK its 6.
