Thanks for replies - all advice is very much appreciated. I'd rather gamble on the stock exchange than waste it on bingo/pools/lottery. I was looking at AJ Bells Dodl SIPP. Any views? I'd like to buy funds and shares - I think they don't charge a fee for dealing but have a platform fee and 'holding' fee.
Why that rather than any other? It's easier to comment if people here know what the attraction of that particular SIPP is.
I;m looking at that one because they say they don't charge for buying funds/ shares. Also, I'm certain that I will have a comfortable retirement due to profit gained from property, regardless of any CGT I'll need to pay. My purpose for starting a SIPP is to invest cash that is earning v little interest. I'm close to the max I can put into ISAs so I'd like to invest the rest of the cash.

I've recently moved my (less than £20k) personal pension from Vanguard to Dodl, mostly because of Vanguard's new £4-a-month minimum charge.
The investment choices at Dodl are a bit idiosyncratic (more so than with Vanguard) but as this is only 2% or so of my retirement savings I'm not too bothered. I've picked a couple of their index funds.
Mind you, I've also bought an Euromillions ticket :)

The service certainly appears to be 'cheap as chips' at 0.15% annual fee ( no dealing fees) and is a  much stripped down version of A J Bell's full fat offering.

As long as you are happy with the restricted investment choices ( 39 funds and 80 UK and USA shares) together with the app only functionality ( no Web version), could work for you given its relative simplicity.

Appreciate not everyone wants or need an all singing all dancing SIPP with the attendant bells and whistles. This product could be as good as any to at least get you started. Certainly they won't refuse your business as occured with Santander!
