I started missing payments in January 2025, and between February and June I was getting loads of letters from creditors—mostly warning that my accounts would be defaulted unless I paid in full by certain dates.

But since mid-June, things have gone strangely quiet. I’ve been checking my credit reports across different agencies, and so far only PayPal has actually defaulted the account (back in May).

Just wondering if anyone’s experienced something similar? Could it be a delay in reporting, or maybe something’s up with my mail?

Not particularly odd, Amex usually move within 3-6 months. Others can take up to 18 months.

They may be selling the debts on? You'll hear when they are ready.

Just means they are done with sending their standard letters, all computer generated you see.

Next steps will be default/sale of debt or assignment.

Just wanted to share another quick update: I’ve submitted an affordability complaint to the Financial Ombudsman against my creditors.

In one of the cases, HSBC claimed they’d assessed my income based on an annual salary of £86,000—which is way off. My actual earnings were much lower, and that inflated figure seems to have shaped the Ombudsman’s initial decision.

I’ve now submitted my payslips to correct the record, and the Ombudsman has confirmed they’ll reconsider the case in light of this new evidence.

If anyone else has had creditors misstate their income during affordability checks, I’d be interested to hear how you approached it and what the outcome was.

HSBC Debt – Moorcroft Contacted Me but No Defaults Showing

I got a phone call from Moorcroft saying they’re chasing debt for my HSBC credit card and loan.

I told them I haven’t received any letters from them or HSBC, so I had no idea who they were or how they were involved. They claimed they sent letters to my address—one on 6 August for the credit card and another on 9 August for the loan.

I explained that I’ve yet to receive anything in writing and that I’d prefer to wait for official correspondence before engaging, especially since they were asking for personal details like my address and email. I asked them to confirm whether defaults had been registered on the accounts. They said both HSBC accounts were defaulted in July.

However, I’ve been monitoring my credit file and no defaults have appeared yet.

Moorcroft said they’ll place the accounts on hold for the next two weeks to give time for the letters to arrive.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with Moorcroft or HSBC—where defaults were claimed but not yet showing on your credit report? And how long did it take for them to appear, if at all?

Also, what should the next steps be with Moorcroft after receiving the letters? Will the next steps be setting up monthly payments? Any advice would be appreciated.

Never speak to these people on the phone. Ignore all phone calls, texts and E Mails.

Wait till you receive a letter by snail mail.

Then when you receive a letter come back for further help.

Its standard DCA double talk, designed to confuse and disrupt as much as possible so that you will comply with what they say, its an old well worn collection strategy to muddy the waters.

Bottom line is this, Moorcroft are only acting for HSBC, so, other than asking you to pay, that is the fullest extent of their involvement in all of this, they don`t own the debt so can`t do anything should you choose not to engage with them.

I`d ignore them completely until either your credit file updates, showing the default, or they return the debt to HSBC and another strategy is adopted, as there is nothing they can do.

    Letter from Moocroft today:

”Your details have been passed to us by HSBC to act a collection agent and we will now be dealing with your account.

We offer a flexible approach to repaying your account and have different options that suit a wide range of individual circumstances.  You may have been unable to find a suitable repayment plan on this account previously and we believe that we can help you repay the account. …”

    Letter from HSBC today:

We’re getting in touch to let you know that Moocroft Debt Recovery Limited will be taking responsibility for  the administration of your account.  This is because we were either unable to contact you to review your circumstances on your balance remains unpaid with no repayment plan in place. You don’t need to do anything just yet, Moocroft Debt Refovery will contact you within the next 14 days to assess your current financial circumstances and will provide you with the best possible support.

Is the suggestion  still not to engage Moocroft at this stage?

Do not contact them and ignore any phone calls, texts and E Mails.

If you get a letter by snail mail come back and ask for advice.

They may threaten a door knocker, they are not bailiffs, treat them like double glazing salespeople, ignore or if you do happen to answer the door just say not today thank you and shut the door.

Don't do anything until you know it has defaulted. They have no power to do anything, their only weapon is creative writing and they'll use that as much as they can . They wrote to me numerous times saying they were very disappointed i hadn't contacted them, that i qualified for a monthly repayment offer, and then that they were considering their options for further recovery action (the classic meaningless phrase thst they all seem to use) They gave up then and just passed it back to Capquest.

When acting as collection agent, that is the absolute limit of what they can do, ask you to pay, nothing more.

    Has the debt defaulted?

    No?

Then ignore them, they will go through their standard letters and then return the account to HSBC.
