First timer tho I’ve been on the newsletter for years.
My mums facing some frustration.
Many years ago her and her ex owned a property which due to financial issues, during a nasty breakup, started facing repossession from the bank.
My mum moved out and started renting elsewhere. The ex started subletting the rooms a few months later.

Council tax wasn’t paid by the ex since she moved out. Even though he said he would.
There’s about £250 owed in the end, which she was chased for. As a matter of principle she agreed to pay half and the council agreed to pursue the ex for the remainder.

8 years later, with no further communication from anyone, mum has the debt collectors on the doorstep, £300 added to the outstanding amount and I’ve beed trying to help get to the bottom of it.
The ex declared bankruptcy years ago which moves the full liability to mum, but we didn’t know that and it’s just been sat there.
I’m happy to pay the original outstanding amount myself to be done with it. But this extra £300 is just frustrating.
Any advice?

No.
When mum moved out her liability for CT ceased. Her ex's bankruptcy only transfer liability for debt accrued before she moved out. The Council could have chased the lodgers if their LL wasn't paying.
Mum needs to go back to Council with evidence of the date she moved out and ask them to recalculate. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Thanks for the reply. She still ‘owned’ the house. Both her and her Ex name was on the mortgage the council have evidence she moved out and believe her but still hold her liable.0
