Frugal Bytes with TechnoThrift

Hey there, lovely folks of MSE 👋

I’m TechnoThrift, and I’ve just wandered into this corner of the internet because—brace yourselves—our mortgage is on track to stick around until we’re well into our late 60s. Cue the horrified gasp 😱.

When I picture our 60s, I imagine lazy mornings, spontaneous getaways, and working less —not being shackled to a mortgage statement!

Our fixed costs? Sorted. We’re pretty savvy when it comes to bills—always hunting down deals and trimming the fat. But discretionary spending? Now that’s where things go a bit off the rails. Honestly, I couldn’t tell you where it all goes!

So, I'm here to get serious, stay accountable, learn from you wise and wonderful people—and hopefully have a laugh or two along the way 😄

Thanks for having me!

P.S. The mortgage beast currently sits at £155,600

You’re in exactly the right place – loads of people here are in the same boat and there’s always good advice (and motivation) flying around.

Getting a handle on where the discretionary spending is going is such a game changer. Have you tried doing a spending diary or using something like YNAB/Monzo pots? It can be a bit of a shock at first, but it really helps show those “little” spends that quietly add up.

Also, £155k is a big number but absolutely doable if you chip away with overpayments (even small ones) and keep tweaking things. There are some great mortgage-free wannabe diaries on here that are brilliant for inspiration too.

Looking forward to following your journey – and yes, a laugh or two along the way definitely helps!

Yes, that's great advice. I'm kicking it off with a spending diary so I'll be back in a few days with how that's gone!

Monzo could work as I already do sinking pots for gifts, annual bills, holidays etc  (one account and a trusty spreadsheet to keep track) so applying the same logic to our spends account could just work  🙃
