August 2025 Grocery Challenge

All receipts tallied up and I'm pleased to say the total is £198.73, which considering we had family to stay I'm really pleased with. The last couple of months have been over budget, but the extra stores helped out. Plenty left in cupboards and freezer, so it should only be fruit and veg and bread needed.6

Well I've busted my budget! Was trying to go extra tight this month (£175) as I'm aiming to spend £350 month on average over 2025. I just couldn't do it. I was running out of so many things. So I sat down and organised a Tesco home delivery (£152.98).
Bought toilet and kitchen rolls, Laundry detergent pods, Calgon, dog food, cheese, bacon, eggs, dairy, fruit, veg, ginger nuts, sparkling water, dog food, mayo, deli meat, HP sauce, soy sauce, frozen hake and cod fillets, tonic water, orange juice, and two bottles of merlot. Many of these items will last a couple of months.
The basics are now stocked up, and we're still 'eating the freezer'. Toms, carrots, and beans are being harvested from the garden.
£302.17 has now been spent this month. so I'm way over. Think I need to be more realistic with targets. When the milk runs out will be the cue for the next shop, hopefully in over a week.3 -
I am a weekly meal planner when I am planning. That seems long enough to my mind as I always run out of ideas for the weekend. I also like to shop weekly too and I like to have a mostly empty fridge by shopping day and then fill it up again (cupboards and freezer can be as full as possible) Usually have a bigger shop one week and a smaller one the next.
I do like to check over commitments and work schedule's for the week with my husband and we will plan the meals around these, eg working late, will be a quicker easier to cook meal and afternoon at home gives time for a longer cook.
My plan is usually quite basic based around a choice of carbs, so usually have one meal a week each of potato, pasta, rice, noodles and fit in the meat and flavours around that. Work lunches are usually one batch cooked meal on a Sunday, or sandwiches and a few leftovers from the week.
I like to have it planned as I am terrible at decision making, especially when tired and hungry, if I know it has all been decided in advance, I just get food out and cook it.
We have just a fridge freezer currently and have had extra freezers over the years which have been really useful. Planning a new kitchen which will have an extra freezer as it is such a help for the batch cooking, YS bargains, fruit from the trees etc.

I've £11.02 left from last week's food budget, that I'm transferring to the bulk fund.
I'd bought Quorn mince and Quorn chicken style pieces to try as I was running out of ideas as what to cook without it.
I'm still doing odds and sods shopping instead of a proper shop.
I'm keen to start shopping better still, but it will be slow and steady.
I'm starting the week with £40.
I've different bits and bobs in the cupboard, plenty to make a couple of meals, although I'm getting bored with salad and am not keen on stir Fry's as much as I've tried to get used to it and eat it.Decluttering campaign 2023

A £21.82 spend in Sainsbury's, Tesco and Iceland.
I'd bought budget free eggs, more Quorn mince, Quorn chicken style pieces (on offer in Iceland), tofu, Quorn chicken style fillets, 2 pots of pasta sauce, budget yoghurt, 1 bag of budget frozen vegetables, 3 bags of frozen fruit, bananas plus salad veg.
It's shocking that I'd bought not much for so much, even with purchasing things on offer.
I must admit I needed tofu, frozen fruit and the chicken style fillets and did the usual picking up bits and bobs.
I'm hoping to be okay for a couple of days though.Decluttering campaign 2023

600 monthly i have 180 left and one shop left as I go from 23rd to 23rd. Have had a busy month so this maybe why we have ate less. I eat a protein rich breakfast ( bacon or eggs or yogurt ) Then veg mainly for main meal. If I dont have protein at breccy time I have a main incorporating fish or cheese for main meal.21k savings no debt4
