Hello all,
To start off i have i have been debt free to my knowledge for over 5 years and my experian report and others show i have no debt in my name, this morning i received a letter from capquest saying they where now holding a debt that they have transferred form capquest limited to capquest...
i have no knowledge of this debt and the more confusing part is the letter is addressed nearly to me but the surname is missing a letter off the end of it? ie if my name was john smiths the letter is addressed to john smith.
do i need to follow this up or is it just a scam ?

Could there be an outstanding debt that is almost 6 years old?
This is assuming you live in either England or Wales.
We do see old debts that are almost statute barred that suddenly reappear.
It isn't a scam but probably a try on, if you ignore it wait and see if there is any follow up.If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.1 -
Does the letter ask you to make payment, or is it just for information purposes only with regard to the owners name change?
Sometimes this occurs with old debts, even ones that have been settled, its just the computer churning out automated letters when accounts that are bought in bulk are then re-assigned to a different company.
I doubt you will hear anything else about this, I myself received such a letter from Cabot a few years ago, it concerned a debt included in my IVA some 10 years previously, its just a glitch in the system, nothing to be bothered about.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. It sounds like they are doing some internal bookkeeping.
Ignore for now.
If they send a letter demanding payment, respond with a prove-it1 -
hey thank you all, for the responses.
They did in fact attach a 2nd letter requesting payment with highly discounted amount.
does the fact the name is misspelt matter at all ?

The misspelling doesn't make any difference it isn't a legal letter so no problem.
Send them this.

It doesn't matter which version of the spelling you use.

These companies buy up portfolios of old debt, either they are so old they have become statute barred or there is no compliant paperwork for them.
They then try to get the debtor, you in this instance, to cough up in the vane hope you will comply without question.
This is the reason why they have offered you a large discount, to give you the impression you can settle this on the cheap without them having to answer questions about the debt or provide you with any proof.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
