Further Steps Notice unknown debt

Hello all,
I was asked by my ex-husband to help pay an amount that he received a Further Steps Notice for recently.
He has no idea why he has received this letter from HMCTS Norfolk (with Great Yarmouth Magistrates Court address), and has assumed it is for a CCJ for catalogue debt that was registered in 2014. He recently asked me to help him sort out the letters from Cabot debt collectors regarding the CCJ, and he then received a letter stating they would no longer chase the debt due to the age of the CCJ. The catalogue debt, although in his name, was a result of us not being in a great financial situation due to him being made redundant and needing school uniforms, shoes and clothing for our 4 children at the time. I was not able to sustain payments and it went into default.
The further steps letter is for £1525.01, the old CCJ is for £991.15.
We separated under not great circumstances in 2020 and divorced in 2021, but have tried to stay amicable for our children. He has not paid any maintenance but has occasionally helped with school uniform. I have paid for his mobile phone tariff since we separated because it was on my account, and I needed him to be contactable for our children.
He wants me to pay £500 towards the further steps notice as he thinks its debt from when we were together, but from everything I've researched, it is unlikely to be a result of non payment of a CCJ, and more likely to be something like a parking or motoring fine.
I can't afford to hand him money without there being just cause, (can't really afford it even if there is, but I try to be as fair as I can).
He says he is going to ring the court tomorrow to ask what it's for, but it's really worried and upset me and I'm not certain that he would tell me the truth. I have seen the further steps notice letter and the division code is 030, and also shows as account number followed by the letters NF.
Does anyone have any ideas what this could be for?

It sounds like a magistrates court fine to me, speeding, parking, some other indiscretion, surely he must know if he`s received a summons??
Court fines do not have to be paid in a lump sum, whatever the fine is for, he can pay it in instalments.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. It's a Magistrate Court fine. Could be anything except it would not be anything a County Court would handle.
If your name isn't on it it is nothing to do with you. His problem.0
