Council Tax information

Options
Does anyone know if the general public have any way of finding out if Council Tax for a specific property (not their own!) is in arrears?
I suspect that this sort of info isn't available under (say) the Freedom of Information act and probably not permissible under say the Data Protection Act.

No. Why are you wanting to know? A debt doesnt transfer to a new house owner or renter if that is what you are worried about.
  • No, not concerned in the slightest about whether Council Tax arrears transfer to a new house or renter.
I’m just wondering under what circumstances the Local Authority might consider placing some sort of caution at the Land Registry.

Only once they’ve been to court to a charging order and the debt has to be over a certain amount for them to do that. And obviously the property has to be owned by the person owing the money. I think it likely that payment plans et cetera would be explored before the council would want to go down that route.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

If a charge was put on a property by a council, then it is the duty of a potential buyer's conveyancer to ensure the charge was removed before their client bought the property
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
