Missing wages

Options
I recently changed my bank account details online (I work for the NHS in Wales) and unfortunately put the incorrect details in. Consequently my wages for April went into another account and as yet cannot be retrieved. My payroll/finance dept. have been helpful but say they can go no further. I contacted my bank as they suggested (Santander) and they say the finance dept. should contact them. I am going around in circles and would appreciate any advice. I know this was my error so no nasty comments please!!

I can imagine that's pretty frustrating
I would try Santander again and escalate with them explaining clearly what has happenned with your bank details and the "wrong" ones.

I'm not sure if there is a universal solution to this problem

Have HR now got the correct details (to prevent next salary payment going to the wrong account?)

does that mean Santander have requested money back but the account holder has not agreed?

OP, how far has your payroll/finance department gone - ie what have they actually done?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Your employers are the ones that need to sort this out. Santander are not going to deal with you as on the face of it the transaction has nothing to do with you (except that you claim* that the money was sent to the account by mistake and was meant for you).

Your employer should either be contacting Santander or their own bank who will then contact Santander on their behalf.

*I'm not implying any doubt in what you are saying, that is just the way that it looks to Santander.

The only thing that payroll can do is to try to recall the payment - but if it has already been credited to the wrong account, that will almost certainly fail.

Have Santander confirmed that the payment has gone to A.N.Other's account?  This sort of thing used to happen more often that you'd like to think with LGPS lump sum payments, usually because the pensioner had transposed two digits.  However, in over 90% of cases the receiving bank wouldn't have an account of that number, so the payment would go into a 'holding' account until someone got round to doing something about it.  If you know the (wrong) account details you quoted, then Santander should be able to trace it.  But note that they will probably have to reject the payment back to your payroll rather than transfer it - on your word - to your new account.

If you are really unlucky, your  money has gone into a 'live' account held by someone else.  In cases like these, all Santander can really do is ask the recipient to return the money - but if they try to claim that the payment was genuine (he said she said) or say that they have spent the money, then it's really difficult.

Fingers crossed that you are one of the over 90% and that your money is just sat in a holding account.

If you put the account details into here it will tell you if it is a valid account number but not necessarily that it is an active account.
