Pre 97 additional State Pension

Options
Hi

Having just sorted out my mums self assessment bill, I thought I'd look into her state pension entitlement and I'm not sure it's correct!

This is the breakdown of how her state pension is made up:

Basic State Pension                        £176.45
Pre 97 additional State Pension      £173.55
Less contracted out deduction        £38.91

Total Payable                                   £134.64

Post 97 additional state pension  £5.01
Graduated Retirement Benefit     £8.82
Age Addition                                £0.25

The amount each week is           £325.17

This seems a very high amount for a state pension. To put some context to it, Mum is 83, she retired at 60. My dad retired at 65 but actually passed away on his 66th birthday in 2000 - could the extra amount be anything to do with my dads contributions?

Whilst Mum did work, it was mostly part time and she says she doesn't think she made any extra payments. I just thought it seemed a very high amount for a state pension and am now wondering if there's been a mistake for many years and she's been paid much more than she was/is due!

Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

As both your parents reached State Pension Age prior to the introduction fo the new State Pension in 2016, your mother would have been eligible to inherit from your fathers pension on his death. The amount is high but not surprisingly so - my mothers doubled to nearly £300 a week following the death of my father.

The only thing  that looks a bit odd is the 'total payable' figure, which I think should reflect the total of all three figures above it.
  • Thanks - I was getting paranoid I would call them to query it and they'd tell me she owes thousands back!

I think the layout is misleading:

Pre 97 additional State Pension      £173.55
    Less contracted out deduction        -£38.91

    Total Payable                                   £134.64

Add on all the other figures and you get to £325.17.

Absolutely! I wrote it exactly as it was laid out in the letter. They hadn't put any minus figures in and on asking mum over the phone to read it out to me, it just didn't make sense so I went and got the letter myself! But I feel reassured now that she's not been overpaid thousands for 25 yrs :)
