Undiagnosed Autism in adult

Options
Suspected  Undiagnosed Autism combined with Dyslexia in my 50yr old son:

finances in a mess… heavily in debt.
Doesn't own anything, so nothing for the bailiffs to seize.

where to turn to … ????

I am his mum & tried to sort it out…didn't work.

Is there a form of guardianship in such cases?

Has anyone ever considered a Spendthrift Trust to protect his inheritance (£200,000 house.. to be shared between 4….£50,000 each)
cannot face disinheriting him.
Help… has anyone ever been in this situation?

    Hi,
You might want to think about a "power of attorney" (POA) if you are willing and able to take this on of course.

Not an expert on the inheritance side of things, but his debts could be written off if his creditors were aware of the situation and a suitable complaint detailing matters was sent to each of them.

What type of debts are we talking about here, consumer debt/council tax/rent???

Consumer debt is all non priority, but if he owes rent or council tax, that`s a bit more serious.

  • Thank you for your reply. SO kind of you.
As a self employed carpenter he does not have a regular income.
His partner left him 4 years ago, taking the children,.
Soon after this he broke his foot & was off work.
    He became severely depressed.
His father & I supported him paying his rent for 5 months.
then 2 years ago the fellow he worked for on a self employed basis retired and left him high and dry with no income or workshop .
He tried being employed but it did not work out.
The major debts are HMRC ( he hasn’t completed a tax form for 4 years) & Council Tax & a Barclays Bounce Back Loan.
He is in arrears with water, gas & electricity
He manages to keep his rent & phone bills up to date  in fits and starts and thankfully his landlord is very understanding.
He gives the most pressing bailiffs/debt collectors a tenner every so often, to keep them off his back.
He owns nothing, so they cannot seize his assets.
    His father owns his truck.
I worry that they will put him in prison for not paying his Council Tax.
He has no idea how to manage his affairs, he is a high achieving autistic person in that he is gifted where carpentry is concerned, but struggles with everything else.
His son has recently been diagnosed with Autism & researching this I feel my son too is “on the spectrum”.  He had problems at school but in the 1980s neither dyslexia or autism were diagnosed.
Power of Attorney is not really an option given my age.
    I really do despair.
