Fantasy EFL - Game guidelines

Welcome to Fantasy EFL, where you can compete by creating your own team of 7 players and 2 clubs across all 3 EFL divisions each week, who will score points based on their actual performances during the regular EFL season!

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to play, including registration, creating your team, scoring and everything else you need to know to get you going.

1.
  Registration & login

Fantasy EFL is completely free of charge.  To play, you must first register or login with an existing EFL online account. After registering for an EFL online account, you will be required to enter a team name, set your supported club and agree to Fantasy EFL terms and conditions before you can proceed.

2.
 Team creation

Your team will consist of 7 players and 2 clubs from any of the 3 EFL divisions and there are no player costs or budgets to worry about.

Your team will contain the following:
PositionPlayers per position
Goalkeeper 1
Defenders2 – 3
Midfielders2 – 3
Forwards1 – 2

Formations available

  1. 1-2-2-2
  2. 1-2-3-1
  3. 1-3-2-1

You can change your formation by removing a player from one position and adding in a player from another position, either from the pool of players or by using the formation dropdown found to the side of the pitch.

Player & club limits

There are no restrictions on how many times you can select an individual player over the course of the season, but you can only select a maximum of 2 players from any one club each gameweek.

You can only select an individual club a maximum of 5 times over the course of the season.

3. Managing your team

You can make as many changes to your team as you like each gameweek – there are no limits on the number of transfers and no player prices, so you can swap out all seven players and two clubs every week.

Captain and Vice-captain

Each gameweek, you must choose a captain who will earn double points for your team. You can change your captain as many times as you like until they become locked (see point 8 – Lockout), but you cannot switch to a player who has already played in the current gameweek. To make the change, use the “Captain” button on the player’s profile.

You also need to select a vice-captain, who will earn double points only if your captain does not play. Like the captain, you can change your vice-captain as many times as you want until they are locked, but not to a player who has already played. Use the “Vice-Captain” button on the player’s profile to make this change.

Captaincy and vice-captaincy only applies to players, so you cannot apply it to either of your 2 selected clubs.

If both your captain and vice-captain don’t play, no player in your team will score double points.

Selecting your next gameweek team

A new feature for Fantasy EFL 2025/26 will allow players to create their team for the following gameweek as soon as the existing gameweek kicks off.

For example, if you have saved your team for Gameweek 1, as soon as the first EFL game in 2025/26 kicks off, you’ll be able to select your team for Gameweek 2.

Team roll-over

Your team will roll-over to the next gameweek automatically, meaning that you will always have a scoring team if you don’t make any changes, assuming that your players are selected to play by their clubs and your clubs have a fixture.

If upon your team rolling over it means that you will exceed the selection cap (5) on one of your clubs, then we will randomly auto-replace that club with another.

4. Chips

Fantasy EFL has two chips available for use, one being brand new for Fantasy EFL 2025/26!

  1. Max Captain: automatically selects your highest scoring player as your gameweek captain (available twice per season)
  2. One Club: allows an unlimited number of players to be selected from one club (available once)

Max Captain

The Max Captain chip automatically makes your highest-scoring player the captain for that gameweek, but it must be applied before the gameweek kicks off. You can also reset it anytime before the first game begins.

You can use your Max Captain chip twice over the course of the season – once between between 1st August 2025 and 4th February 2026, and once more between 5th February 2026 and the end of the season.

But if you do not use your first Max Captain chip before 5th February 2026, you’ll only have one Max Captain chip to play before the end of the season - it will not roll over!

One Club

New for 2025/26, the One Club chip allows you, for one gameweek only, to select as many players as you like from one club, bypassing the usual two-club limit - this chip can be used at any point throughout the season.

You can only apply your One Club chip before the gameweek kicks off and you can reset your One Club chip anytime before the first game begins.

5. Scoring points

We take all reasonable care to ensure that Fantasy EFL points - which are based on game data information supplied by our official data partner - will be finalised and applied based on the data feeds provided to us.

Please note however, after each match, our data partner reviews its data to ensure best possible accuracy and any changes may be reflected in Fantasy EFL points.

Fantasy EFL will finalise points 12 hours after the final whistle of each fixture, ensuring there is not an extended period of uncertainty for users. Beyond this time, any changes would only be made in exceptional circumstances

Please note that we will not enter into discussion around any of the statistics used to calculate scores for any individual match.

6. Lockout

Fantasy EFL will implement a rolling lockout whereby players and clubs will become locked as soon as that player or club kicks off in the current gameweek.

Once lockout is active, you will no longer be able to add or remove selections involving that club.

Once your captain and/or vice-captain become locked, you will no longer be able to change your captain and/or vice-captain.

Lockout will be automatically 12 hours after the final game of the gameweek is completed.

7. Leaderboards

Once you have saved your team, you can enter into public & private leagues with friends, family, colleagues and other people playing Fantasy EFL.

There are three leagues which you will automatically be entered into once you enter the game:

  • Overall leaderboard – all saved teams
  • Club leaderboard – for all teams managed by those with the same favourite club as you
  • Division leaderboard – for all teams managed by those whose favourite club plays in the same division as you

8. Mini-leagues

You will be able to create and join an unlimited number of public or private mini-leagues.

Creating a public league means that this will be openly available for all users to join from the “Join a League” page, whereas creating a private league means that others can only join this league if you share the league information with them.

If you have created a league, you are able to remove users from your league up until that league starts scoring.

9. Gameweeks

Fantasy EFL gameweeks will run from Thursday until Wednesday each week during the regular season. To see when the next gameweek begins, click on ‘My Team’ and look for the countdown at the top of the page.

If clubs have more than one fixture in any given gameweek, any players or clubs you have from the club playing more than once will earn points from all the fixtures that they are involved in during that gameweek.

Any team captains playing in multiple fixtures will also earn double points for each match they play in.

If you have selected players and/or clubs that don’t have a fixture – or, for whatever reason, do not play - they will score zero points for that gameweek.

Good luck!
