NHS Pension overpayments
The Pensions Team Leader at my Trust kindly checked my pension calculation, and looked on the system, confirming both by email and verbally that (i) the original calculations where correct and (ii) they had not been in contact with NHS Pensions to inform them of any change, and that this could be confirmed and verified by their looking on the system that connects employers with NHS Pensions, where nothing was showing up. I therefore rang the NHS Pensions helpline to inform them that all was in order, and in early June I received an email saying that the issue had been referred up the line. I heard nothing more.

Nothing like this but I did have a letter telling me that there was some more money coming because. That was it there was nothing but the full stop after the word "because"
I had some "email discussion" with them and all I got was standard messages, some of which were essentially wrong - eventually a sensible email came through from someone who kindly provided the calculations.
I would send a complaint to nhsbsa.pensionsmember@nhsbsa.nhs.uk
and get them to clarify what is happening1 -
I"ve emailed asking them to stop sending demands until the issue is clarified. Also, sorry, there was a typo in my post; I actually retired in 2017. I've just realised I can edit it.1

hi exactly the same thing has happened to me in August 2025 and I’ve had demands for the money to be repayed (approx 20k)
I’ve asked for a review and have heard nothing back. Have you got sorted yet?0 -
I have heard nothing back so far. In my case the amounts they were demanding were in the hundreds, not thousands

My background is LGPS rather than NHS, but I can't think of a single reason why an employer would issue revised pay details nearly 10 years after someone had left.
Can only think of two possible reasons:
- You have reached SPA and NHS pensions carried out a full check of your benefits/GMP and found your GMP had been incorrectly input at retirement. (Only applies if you have pre 1997 service).
- They have carried out a McCloud review and found that your pension was incorrectly calculated when you retired.
Either way, you need the correct answer - not some waffle trying to blame your employer - and sight of their workings out.

When did you retire and start to take your benefits from the NHS scheme?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0
