Buying IPODs in the US

I'm thinking about buying an IPOD and a friend goes to the US quite regularly and I was thinking whether it would be worthwhile getting one from there - does anyone have any knowledge as to whether there are any compatibility issues?

    Here's a reply I posted a while ago on a similar thread.

If you get home and find your iPod 'thingy', lol, doesn't work or doesn't work properly.....Apple WILL NOT exchange or refund it because you bought it in America. It also wouldn't matter if you bought it from an Apple store itself. Do not believe any salesperson who tells you you will have no problem when you get home, they only want the sale and they don't much care about what happens when you leave the US.

You will only be entitled to a repair which in Apple language means you will be sent a reburbished model as a replacement.

    As confirmed by Apple.

    Been there, done that.

Of course, if you're happy with the possibility of accepting a refurb days after spending big bucks on a brand spanking new model, then ignore all the above. :D

Hi - thanks for that - definitely a pitfall! Is it the same story if it were to be returned to the shop it was bought from in the US?

If it could be returned promptly, that would be ok. After a short timeframe (I cant remember exact time but I think it was 14 days) you lose the ability to return for refund and a repair will be offered. I was really shocked at how strict they were tbh and I was very unhappy at only being able to get a refurb as a replacement. My iPod was only about £25 cheaper and knowing what I know now....the saving just wasn't worth the hassle I had.
  • My daughter was bought an Ipod from the States, it had been made by HP under licence from Apple. Not noticed on purchase and also sold with worldwide guarantee. The problem when it went wrong was that the product had to be returned to the States for collection from HP! I remonstrated with HP but they were totally unmoving.

If it hadnt been for the fact that we already had Ipod accessories she wouldnt have bought another one, on principle. So we have been sucked in to the marketing hype!

Furthermore, I will never knowingly buy a HP product again, as the Ipod purchase was bought 5 months before it was given, so when it died two months after the purchase date they didnt want to know. Even though on investigation there were known faults that had been found on various forums.

I wouldnt recommend, you have more chance purchasing one here.
