Had a job for 16 years and was made redundant earlier this year. Have had a few interviews and started a job where I spent only a day before realising it wasn’t for me. Now have an offer for another job and they want references but have only given them the 16 year job details. Does it matter? Can imagine the one day job reference would most likely cause me to lose this job. So I didn’t include it.

Difficult one - I presume you'll get a P45 or P60 ( not sure which it is ) from the old one day employer - so they may ask, and then you have to explain why you lied.

Maybe better off being up front, but then you could as you say retract the offer.

If it was me, I'd do as you suggest ( ignore the one day ) but have a "It was so short I didn't think it mattered for a reference" quote ready.

    Depends what they asked for.

    details of all previous employers?
    most recent employer?
a reference from any previous employer (in the last X years)
    etc

You don't have to pass the P45 to the new employer IIRC. You can fill in a new starter checklist instead.

Forget about the 1 day job. Good luck with the next one.

    AI Overview
If you don't give your P45 to your new employer, you will likely be placed on an emergency tax code, which can lead to higher tax deductions until the correct tax information is provided. You might also need to fill out a starter checklist to help your new employer determine the correct tax code according to GOV.UK. While it's not legally required to give your P45 to a new employer, providing it helps ensure your correct tax code is applied from the start

What you don't say is whether the 1 day employer accepted the job was not for you and had no objections to you leaving immediately. Some employers want details of all employment, others aren't interested in short term fillers.

However if you breached your contract, many employers would be wondering if you would do it again
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

That is entirely up to the new employer. Some (many?) won't care in the slightest, others will take any dishonesty (lying by omission) very seriously. Nobody can give you a definitive answer.
