Can the hmrc withold my tax rebate?

I was made bankrupt 18 odd years ago managed to rebuild my life and now last year I overpaid tax on when employed and now hmrc are withholding it due to my bankruptcy, which was discharged many years ago. Any advice would be appreciated

Have you spoke to HMRC? what reason have they said about keeping funds? (ive a sneaking feeling its the owing them funds with your bankrputcy)Philnicandamy's OH and mum to a two year old god help me!:p

The reson we are asking variations on this is because what you are saying sounds unusual,and probably wrong. Either you have misunderstood what HMRC has said or they havent been clear or HMRC have made an error.
You need to speak to HMRC for a clear explanation of why they are withholding the money. If they say it is because of your bankruptcy, ask them to put that in writing because you want to take debt advice on it.0
