Council tax help for parents.

Options

Good afternoon, everyone,

I’m reaching out for some advice on behalf of my parents and would really appreciate any guidance.

They have lived in Daventry (West Northamptonshire Council) for the past 40 years. Only last month, my father managed to get their council tax band reduced from a C to a B. It turns out they have likely been overpaying since 1993.

My question is — how far back are they entitled to a rebate, if at all?

My father tends to accept whatever is offered without questioning it, but I want to ensure they receive what they’re fairly owed and aren’t brushed off by the council.

Any insight or shared experiences would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Although in theory the overpayment refund could be backdated to 1993, some councils are now destroying CT payment records more than 6 years old in the belief that such action is GDPR compliant and thus any refunds will be limited to 6 years.

WN is a relatively new council and may well subscribe to this policy. Plus there is a possibility that they did not receive or have destroyed certain Daventry District Council records.

Thus if WN have CT payment records back to 1993, your father should receive a refund so backdated. but if they don't then it would probably be backdated a maximum of 6 years
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • My council tax got put up from a band A to a band B with no letter after the previous owner appealed and got it reduced to a band A. It smarts a bit to say the least!
