Hi all, my Son starts school for the first time on Tuesday and I've got all the uniform sorted along with some really nice name tags. They need to be sewed in however I'm not very good!!
I want to purchase a sewing machine (hopefully along with a DVD... sewing for dummy's) but its a mind field out there, does anyone have any tips or ideas for what I'm looking for.
Thanks for asny help xxxx

in your position,i would just sew them in by hand.
unless you're sure that you will be sewing a lot and using all the bells and whistles i would start by getting a simple machine (you can get one for under £50- look at places like tesco and aldi)
you need forward, backward and zig zag. all the rest is icing on the cake.
most come with a guarantee of 2 years or more. if you sew a lot, machines need servicing from time to time. (another expense). I never had mine serviced, just bought a new one after a dozen years or so.
you can learn a lot by getting some simple sewing patterns (hobbycraft had some) and following the instructions.
try some very simple projects first and work your way up.
in high school we had to practice doing straight lines and curves on paper before they let us loose on fabric.
I haven't sewed for years (used to make my own clothes etc) but bought a cheap machine just to do curtains and such... and still haven't set it up a year later- it takes up too much space and is quite heavy).
good intentions butter no parsnips...0 -

Funny you should mention wanting a book sewing for dummies cos i have a book called that, lol. I bought it off ebay for about £7 or 8, it explains things in a basic way.
Also have you any fabric shops nearby cos they do from time to time have sales of patterns. I get most of mine now from
www.sewingpatterns.com the last time i bought 2 patterns and with postage it came to about £9 inc delivery.:D0 -
