barclays agreed then declined mortgage

Looking for some advice...

Barclays accepted my remortgage application, affordabilty etc was all ok, application passed the checks but then at the last minute the underwriter declined the application with no proper reason given.

Once an underwriter makes a decision is it possible to ask the bank to reconsider it? 

Has anyone had experience of this? how did you go about doing this and what was the result?

I took Barclays off our panel of lenders... I am not a fan (to put it mildly). 
You can try to appeal the decision, but it really depends on why they declined as to whether or not they will overturn it.

Did you actually have a formal mortgage offer in your hands? Until you do you then nothing else matters. Underwriters being the people with the authority to issue mortgage offers on the lender's behalf.

We had very bad experience with Barclays underwriter.  They reduced the original amount with absolutely nonsensical reasons and requirements. Their in-house mortgage advisor that we dealt with directly couldn't do anything.

We voted with our legs, went to Halifax and, to save time, gave them Barclays' correspondence at the very start. They couldn't make sense of it either and offered us even bigger amount than we wanted.
