Oh, I tried all those things yesterday, including pushing the door, and moving the handle up or down, was there for about 1 hour trying all sorts. I think my issue is the handle doesn't seem to be doing anything, it seems to just move up and down without actually releasing the latch, in fact the handle seems to go up and down far more than it should, like all the way, way past what it used too. But yes, it does settle in the horizontal position when not being held.
Yes, tried it this morning, when it was cooler and no difference I'm afraid
    Ah, ok, BIB is interesting.
In that case, remove the handle via the two screws facing you. No risk in doing this - it's very simple, and can be replaced just as easy.
Pull the handle off, and check the spindle/axle/shaft that passes through and operates the latch. Is it snapped or worn?

These hinges are easy to unscrew and to adjust.

Thanks, I've had a read of the link, but what do I do after I've adjusted the hinges, as I presume the door wont open, is the goal for it to allow me enough room to remove the locked latch manually?
I thought that If there are no hinge bolts it could be possible (not sure) to open the door the other way round - on the hinge side and then extract it from the door frame.
If you do this and the door moves, have something ready to put under it to support it, e.g. few books.
If you successfully removed the door like that, wouldn't you be left with a hole in the side of your house and no way to make it secure other than refitting the door (if this was even possible)?

You'd need to figure out what the problem was, obtain any replacement parts needed, and effect a repair, all before it rained or you needed to go out or to sleep.... Most people would probably need a professional to assist, and personally I'd suggest calling them while the door is still in place rather than having to call them as an emergency when your house is insecure!

If I manage to remove it, I think fitting it back will be as easy as removing. In the worst case scenario, I'd remove the locking mechanism, fit the door back and block it from inside with some bracket. It's a back door.
