Tax refund

Options
I have two jobs. For the financial year ending 5/4/25, I used the tax calculator on this site and on HMRC website.
both results showed I paid too much tax.
the previous other 4tax years’ tax calculations on these two websites showed the tax that I paid was correct.
HMRC have not written to me about a tax refund.
should I just go ahead and send them a letter requesting a tax refund?

You don't need to bother.  They will contact you once they have reviewed the 2024-25 tax year.  That happens automatically later this year.

How confident are you that you have actually paid too much tax?

I am 💯 confident that I overpaid income tax
  • I’ve recently had a tax calculation letter (p800) that I’m owed (overpaid) £6,000 in 24/25 tax year.. I’ve waited nearly 8weeks for my cheque to be sent out.. I’ve called HMRC plenty of times and they get me through security checks and then put the phone down straight away! Do I just wait for the cheque?! It seems to me they do not want to pay out money they owe to us!

With me being self employed and struggling at the moment it’s very stressful any help or advice would be great

A P800 is normally only issued to those on PAYE? Have you just become self-employed after 6th April? If not, what did your calculation show on your self-assessment tax return for 2024/25?

HMRC don't normally send tax refund cheques anymore.

Which tax year did your self employment start?
