Unchecked year in my NI record

There's a tax year on my NI contribution history 20 years ago marked as 'Year is not full. We are checking this year to see if it counts towards your pension. We’ll update your record when this is finished, you do not need to do anything.'

I don't know why this year is still marked as unconfirmed. It would help towards my state pension if this turned out to be a full year - is there anything I can do to get that confirmed either way, before I retire?

You'd need to chase it up with HMRC - the most common reason for that message is apparently that you were classed as self-employed but didn't make voluntary Class 2 contributions - does that sound as if it might apply here ?

It might, but since it's so long ago I would have thought they'd have ruled on that by now - especially since it's way too late to back-pay them.

It seems there's some sort of a glitch in the system and some people get stuck with that message until they contact HMRC and ask them to check it.
