Hello All. I'm a non-taxpayer, on a small work pension which is my only income aside from a little savings interest. A data-only glitch at my pension provider in 2024 accidentally sent incorrect data to HMRC, reporting my pension income as double its actual value (payments weren't doubled!). The issue was identified and corrected at HMRC a few months later. I've been a non-taxpayer since retiring (I'm not yet at State Pension age) but the error's income-doubling data briefly flipped me into standard taxpayer territory and I was incorrectly taxed around £500.

Despite not being a taxpayer and my savings interest always being far under the allowed threshold, HMRC says I need to update my untaxed savings interest estimate to one for 2024-25 (since all they currently have for everyone is 2023-24) before a tax refund process can start. HMRC have said that they only got 2023-24 data directly from the banks and building societies in December 2024, so it could be equally late this time around.
.
They therefore want me to provide the bank/building society names, sort codes, account numbers and annual interest figures. I can't see a way to submit this via my HMRC online account. Is there one? Some links at the HMRC site look promising, but when I try them, seem not to be. I know I can send the info by post (tracked/signed-for) or give it over the phone to an adviser - any thoughts on how secure/risky either way is? Postal tracking only confirms arrival - not where a letter went if it vanishes before reaching HMRC. It seems that many HMRC phone advisers work from home, which adds some concerns about equipment security. Thanks.

Does your P60 show this £500 tax?

Shame you couldn't have got a cumulative tax code issued by March, then the pension company would have refunded you the tax with your final pension payment of the tax year.

Anyway, AIUI there is no way you can do what you want online.  A phone call at 8am is probably the simplest option.  And would allow the refund to be processed at the same time.  Do you think someone is eavesdropping your calls?

Thanks, yes, my P60 shows the tax. Unfortunately the issue wasn't quite sorted out in time for the solution you mention.

No, I don't think anyone's eavesdropping on my calls - I'm probably just being paranoid about IT security at the other end of the call. Thanks very much for the pointer about the best time to call them.

That won't help resolve the op's problem.
