Lost my husband on Xmas eve 2024. Today I received my tax code informing me I owe £195 earlier year and £165.20 this year. Nothing has changed except I got an extra £300 from his state pension and half his nhs pension together approx £1200. This cannot be right I want to write to HMRC but wonder whether it is worth it. Thanks

It COULD be right depending on what your total income was for those tax years and how much tax has actually been paid.

To get help here you'll have to post figures for all of your income including any interest on savings and tax paid on pensions.

If you already pay tax then chances are it will be correct.

State Pension never has tax deducted from it and the first pension payment like that you have inherited is usually paid using the emergency tax code, 1257L.  That can mean no tax (or not enough) tax is deducted on smallish amounts.

If your total income is over the allowance of £12570 you will pay tax on any amount over that allowance.
Is that £1200  you mention monthly or yearly? If it is monthly that comes £14400 which is already over the tax allowance before taking into account any state pension or private pension you receive.
