Hi, I am registered for the online HMRC service and not self-employed. Last year my P800 arrived in mid-June and there was a small tax refund to claim. I know from looking at my online tax details from 24-25 that I can expect a tax refund this year, too.

So my question is can I expect my P800 in June again or is this process rather more random than that and it may be later in the summer?

Any help much appreciated, if I do get it in June it will be paying for a small holiday so thanks in advance,

I don't think anyone can say with any certainty when you might get it.

But I would hazard a guess that you might get it earlier rather than later as people due a refund are more likely to progress chase than those who have extra tax to pay!

My understanding is that P800s are normally issued in autumn but that last tax year they were spilling into 2025 because of inadequate HMRC resourcing - I don't see how definitive calculations can be made before the banks and building societies have reported interest, for example?

What leads to a refund being applicable - are your income streams (as shown in your online account) inaccurate?

Yes, OH’s was in December (he owed some tax) and mine was in March, though HMRC owed me. They did pay me a small amount of interest.

This is what I received online last June through the HMRC portal:

Tax calculation for the year 6 April 2023 to 5 April 2024

This message was sent to you on 17 June 2024

[... details of tax paid and refund due...]

    P800 04/24 2.2

I am not self-employed and everything goes through PAYE

So was I a bit lucky or is this a reasonable timeline for this year?

Thanks again, every reply is appreciated...!

Just to add that unfortunately I do not have large* sums in savings, so this may be a factor too

*below the £1000 tax threshold by my understanding

I know it doesn't address your request for guesses about dates, but I asked yesterday why you're overpaying tax, from the perspective of prevention being better than cure, i.e. are you able to adjust the forecast figures in your online tax account to improve the accuracy of PAYE deductions and avoid a later refund being needed in future?  Your mention of the refund paying for a holiday implied that it's significant!

I would suggest you were lucky that your record was dealt with in June.

Will you be lucky this year ? Maybe, maybe not.

It all depends on what the computer  does, when.

Are you at the front of the queue or in the middle or at the end? No one knows.
