Apparently “Rocket,” means something different in Scotland.

I think I’d vote Nespresso OP. Not the best there is but a good enough middle ground1

Sorry @vacheron. It was just that the name of the machine seemed apt.
I agree with the Sam Vines Boots theory, it worked for you.
My Denby coffee pot is from the 1940s and cost 4 shillings and 6 pence, (22½p) over 80 years. I paid £5 for another one recently. The paper filters are a new thing, the stock I have at present cost 3p each, a pot is 6 cups, and the coffee is good supermarket own brand ground coffee or beans. Washing it takes seconds.2 -
I see reference to a bialetti and a mokka pot further up.
We went on holiday to an air BnB with one. We had no idea what it was, looked for directions online and quickly became sold on it.
We came home and bought two, one for the house and one for the caravan. We've since upgraded to a stainless steel one as we got an induction hob.
We even went to an air BnB without a coffee maker of any kind, bought one and donated it at the end of our trip, as we had limited luggage capacity.
Single source ground coffee from Lidl, makes about 5 shots of espresso, my wife has 2, I have 3 and that does us for the day. You can mix it how you please, I have slightly stronger with milk, and my wife simply adds hot water.
It brews coffee on the cooker near silently, then begins to splutter when it is running out of water. Take it off immediately, or stick the base in cold water to save it becoming stewed.
Beats most coffee shop coffee.3 -
I have never plucked up the courage to try a mokka pot. Is the coffee it creates espresso strength? Does the coffee need tamping down? I do love a tamper.1

It isn’t espresso strength, but it is a little stronger than the regular cafetière coffee, As an example for a smaller moka pot, you would be using about the same amount of coffee as you would for a double espresso but you would get about two cappuccino cups of black coffee.
They are quite easy to use once you understand the science, you fill the bottom with water, put the coffee in the basket just above the water and screw the two together. You then put the pot on the stove top which will boil the water and the resulting pressure will push the water up through the coffee which then collects in the upper part of the moka pot.
You also unfortunately shouldn’t really tamp a moka pot 😊 you just need to fill the basket and gently level it.
The two main things to remember or to turn the heat down a little when you hear it starting to boil so that the water is pushed through at a nice slow and steady speed and also remembering that the bottom of the pot is extremely hot when you come to pour it or handle it, so also make sure you have some kind of trivet rather than put it down on your freshly varnished dining table! 🤪• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.

Dunno about really good. Adequate is what I'd say unless it was a speciality place...Any coffee shop in Italy, France, Switzerland or Germany would wee all over Costa and their ilk. We've become accusomted to pricey rubbish thanks to advertising and fashion.PixelPound said:You pay money to a coffee shop money to get you a really good coffee how you like it0
