Advice needed for when I buy train tickets

We're going to blackpool on the 16th of august and returning on the 23rd so I need to book train tickets from Cwmbran to Blackpool for 3 adults and 1 child with a family & friends railcard so can someone tell me what's the best way to book this.
If I buy two singles from transport for wales it's going to cost £246.70 so it would be better to buy an off peak return for £251.50 so I can travel on a different time train to the connecting one.
If I change my travel plans and book a return ticket from Cwmbran to Manchester Piccadilly it will cost £111.70 so then I would have to buy a off peak open return from Northern trains for £54.35 but will this be a problem doing it this way.

Generally yes, per conditions of carriage a missed connection should not invalidate later tickets. Best practice is to get guard or ticket office to endorse the late ticket to show next guard.
That said, be prepared for an argument if the following ticket is limited to specific train or operator and was not on the same booking (I.e. you hand built the split using a TOC website instead of a splitter site; or it was the only way to be able to buy the split due to booking site issues). Endorsing should help.
I generally try to ensure following tickets are flexible (e.g. off peaks rather than fixed train); best to have only one fixed train in each direction of your itinerary.0 -
