When I worked in debenhams last year pretty much every pair of jeans had a tag on them warning that due to the colour and nature of the fabric that light coloured materials may be stained, and have seen this label on pretty much every pair of jeans I bought0

I have had this tag on every pair of jeans I have bought for a long time now, it would be quite unusual for a pair of jeans not to have this warning tag on.
It is a bit strange that the person giving the gift removed all the tags, as like someone else posted - what if it needed to be returned for any reason? Although that is beside the point here.
It is unlucky this has happened but I really don't think Debenhams or the concession the jeans were bought from have any responsibility in paying for or contributing to the cleaning of the sofa and carpet. It seems to be widely known that the colouring of denim wears off onto other fabrics until it has been washed a few times, even if it didn't have the warning label on.0 -

I have to say in all honesty that over several (and might I add dubious fashion-affilicted years!) this has never happened to me before.
Thanks to everyone for their feedback. It seems that the majority of advice here is leaning towards the defeatist (or maybe realist), and that according to contract law my claim should be against a relative and the relative's claim subsequently should be against Debenhams.
With this in mind, and given the fact that I couldn't be bothered to drive to the store and back only to be told the same, over the weekend I decided to try and clean the upholstery and carpets myself. The carpet now only has a slight mark and most of the dye has come out of the sofas.
It is not ideal and they are not completely good as new, but they hopefully will be after a couple of reapplications. To be honest it is now barely noticeable. Good job I had a carpet cleaner!
Thanks again0 -
It is generally a good idea to wash most clothes before wearing them, you have no idea how many people have tried them on before you, nor how good their personal hygiene is. Also clothes can often spend a long time in transit and storage and may be dusty, dirty and may have come into contact with goodness knows what.
I don't say this as some sort of OCD case, just something to think about, particularly with babies and childrens or clothes for anybody with sensitive skin or allergies.
Here endeth the lesson...."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0
