Well because 1. It was odd how they couldn't give me any information, just wanted info from me.
2. It's a Bank Holiday! And the official pensions centre is closed.
3. My mobile network provider just showed it as Unknown Number, often they have the details of businesses listed, even if I haven't had previous contact with a particular business or organisation.
4. When I Googled the number I found a lot of other people thinking they might have been dodgy calls. You know, on those 'Who called me?' type of sites. Although some on there thought it was legit.0 -
Google search brings up links to various forums and that number has been used by DWP for in excess of 10 years. Various posts on here show that they are using triage pre calls maybe to pick out those that no longer need the service.1

Oh right! Great news, thanks molerat. I will ask MSE if they can change the thread title. Sorry if I misguided anyone - just thought it was a bit weird. Also I was helping an elderly relative who had their email hacked a few days ago, so I suppose I am feeling suspicious of everything, and was kicking myself for giving out my details.0

I had a similar call a week or so back (not the same phone number though) and the woman explained that it was for information gathering purposes so that the request could be directed to the correct team. It made sense to me as they must have had thousands of callback requests and hopefully the next callback operative will be armed with the correct details instead of having to go through it all only to find out you need to speak to a different team for whatever reason, although I'm sure there will the usual verification questions.1
