Free CV Appraisal

This is excellent for anyone who is trying to find a job and wondering if their CV is good enough to win over potential employers...

My Job Group (local jobsites) have started to offer a free professional CV appraisal service to their members. You have to be registered and upload your CV to the site, then register your interest in getting your CV appraised in their Career Centre section. A professional from a company called CVConsultants calls you up at a preferred time and talks you through how to make your CV better! Worked really well for me, loads of stuff I didn't even think of doing as well as lots of little changes!

"Professional" - qualified in what exactly?

Be warned - this company are a commercial entity, so it follows that they are not just doing this out of the goodness of their hearts - will they then be trying to sell you their CV writing service, which doesn't seem to be cheap?

I would be wary of doing this - if you give them your CV you've given them all your persoanl contact details
  • I used them and they were OK - Ran through my CV for about 15 minutes on the phone (they called me).

They did offer me the service of writing a dedicated CV for me (at cost), I'm guessing this is how they get their money, but I politely refused and they were fine with that - the information they gave still helped me (and others I know).

So whilst they are a commercial company, I think the benefits outweigh the short sales pitch they give you (and you politely refuse if you don't want it).
  • Fair enough, but I can't see they'll carry on offering this servicre on a wide scale without wanting some serious return. AND they've still got all your details for the future.
  • In any case, there are plenty of good resources available online without getting these alleged "professionals" involved. A very quick search brought up this for example:

    http://jobsearch.about.com/cs/curriculumvitae/a/curriculumvitae.htm

and there will no doubt be lots more easily and freely available without a sales pitch. :)
  • I did it last November and haven't had any further contact from them since.

I've had emails from the jobsite itself mysheffieldjobs.co.uk, but that's cool as I always like to keep abreast of job openings anyway!

Good point - although it is good to have someone have a run through it where possible, I'd read loads of sites like the one above (theres even similar printed help on the jobsite I posted) and they still came back with some decent advice for me.

I found it useful, if people would like to take it up, that's up to them! I'm just passing it on!
  • Here's another more UK orientated link than the one I posted previously:

We were shown a website in business studies for CVs, which looks really good.
