I have a council after me for non domestic rates. Long story my dad bought a café at 81.

As a dutiful daughter, I helped were I could to run it.  The lease was in his name and all the takings went into his bank. An accountant was employed to do accounts, do wages etc at the time. I covered holidays says off and sickness which I was never on the payroll. I also had my own job.

As dad got older, and confused me and the accountant set up a simple rolling tenancy agreement because dad had been paying money for business rates in this council tax account (I found the takings in a PO account, the safe indoors a biscuit barrel).

A phone call to rates dept with permission from Dad for me to sort so I did and having a bit of authority by my 3 month rolling temporary agreement which we ended after 6 months as he had a manager by then. Everything was then in order or though i thought.

I mentioned to council a third of the property was not used so a guy months later rang me said he had seen the property and had enough info for rate rebate was not there for his visit.

As I had my own job my dad had my mum to do all his affairs as he could not read or write, I believe he was dyslexic so after speaking direct with council to sort out bus(iness)? rates.

November dad gave the keys back i filled in the forms as best i could the end id moved by the Feb the following year.

who and behold ive been served with a liability order for non payment of rates where the paper work went i have no idea. 1

2 years later I've bailiffs after me for a debt which was dad's he died in 2013 he was 86 nothing came up in probate as far as i was aware everything had been settled.

I've pleaded my case with the council. They have sent piles of useless info but they cant send a copy of any court paperwork. I'm just told i've been taken to court. I have land registry papers saying dad was the legal proprietor as I had no responsibility.

Help as I've had a bailiff's letter and a bailiff's letter through the door
Initial caps and paragraph breaks really help. May be not where you might choose them, but as a newbie you may not have editing rights.

Are you being chased because they consider you were jointly liable in some way for paying the rates, perhaps because of all your communications with the council on behalf of your dad?
Or were you the executor of his will and you are being chased in that capacity?

29 Nov 2011 Dad gave up the land registry  lease, the lease was from 2008 until 2022 he died 2013 he was 86 and in poor health they have said 14 Feb 2012 they took me to court but no one has produced any paper work i was not living with Dad then.
Its strange because the correspondence they sent nothing about a demand

They have sent me a revised bill 27th March 2012 but not indicating final bill i did not receive this. I had moved so they cant tell me were anything else was sent? this all started with a bailiffs letter on my door step last November

£1,756.25 so after sorting out the fact Dad had been paying the rates but into his council tax account so over 3k was sitting in that account which i was advised by council how to sort out for him he had been paying the rates but in the wrong account council wanted a responsible person to make sure it was paid  so i did but i was not around for anything after the August2011 there are no CCJs against me i don't think they can produce the liability order and because it was not my business i have no paper trail  because it was dads business
