I'm also having problems this year. I completed the online form but have now received a letter in the post asking me to send evidence to support the claim (they've never asked before, just updated my tax code accordingly).

Annoyingly, the letter is written as if I'm claiming tax relief for specific work-related expenses, although I only applied for the standard £6/week relief as usual.
it tells you in several places that you must submit evidence  with your claim, did you?
if not, then obviously they will ask for it (using a generic letter because you are claiming work related expenses - the working from home one ).

    How to claim

When you claim, you must send evidence that you have to work from home if you’re either claiming:

    • £6 a week for the tax year 2022 to 2023 or later  (  my bolding)
    • the exact amount you’ve spent

If you’re claiming the exact amount you’ve spent, you will also need to send evidence such as a copy of your receipts or bills.

    Use this service to check:

    • if you can claim
    • how to claim

If you complete a Self Assessment tax return, you must claim through your tax return instead.

FWIW my tax code finally got chaged to what I expected 1288L in the July payroll. I guess they are doing extra checks now and it's taking longer
  • I just tried to run through the form again to see if it was still as confusing, and it seems even worse now. It tries to get you to choose your industry via a dropdown list but the list has nothing applicable in it - then it lets you enter your industry in free text - but says you can only claim £60. Then you continue through the form and put £312 as your annual WFH expense and it says you are trying to claim £312 + £60. It definitely didn't do this when I completed the form in early April.

I see you were successful in getting your tax code changed - congratulations! What did you do in the end? Leave it with the £312 + £60 or choose one or the other? I'm also confused by the form and my industry (charity) isn't on the list. I just want to claim the basic £6 a week.

Also, do you know if you're supposed to claim just for the weeks you actually worked?  i.e. 52 - annual leave weeks? Or can you just claim the £6 a week for the whole year?

You can only claim for weeks you actually work from home.

Claims for tax years on or after 6 April 2023 are now calculated in weeks

If you work at home one or more days in a week, you can claim for that whole week.

If you are not sure how many weeks you will be eligible to claim for, we advise you to wait until you know because any further changes may take longer to process.
