Aldi

ive just looked at my reciept today and i have noticed they charged me 12p VAT, so i think aldi is quite expensive as it doesnt include VAT in the price of the item, i atually thought it was expensive before i found out they add on VAT at 17.5%. I never heard of anyone adding VAT on as its usually in the price of the item..is it cause its a foreign company lol

today i bought

1.5kg potatoes £1.49/ Morrisons there £0.89
Cordial £0.79/ Morrisons about £0.50-0.60

even though if i went to morrisons i know id spend more but i was in shock when i saw the total in aldi for 2 items...or it might be me being tight with my money lmao..i know some things you have to watch in aldi as they are quite dear.

anyway rant over !! :j

Check your receipt again Mum. Alot of companies just show you how much of what you have paid is VAT but they are not charging it to you on top of the price as it's included IYSWIM. VAT is only charged on foods that are seen to be luxury items.

I shop in Aldi a lot and the price on the stickers is always the price on the till unless the items have been reduced. Like HariboJunkie advises, I would look again at your receipt - are you looking at the till receipt or the debit card receipt where some companies separate out a handling charge?

In my limited expereince I've found my weekly shopping bill from Aldi to be between 10 and 20% cheaper than the equivalent shop in Tesco or Sainsburys.

Aldi are simply breaking down the cost of your items to show the VAT but you are not paying anymore than the 'advertised' price on the shelf. If the item on the shelf is advertised as £11.75 then £1.75 of that is VAT (in effect £10.00 + £1.75)

Morrisons will also charge you VAT on your purchases but just may not choose to breakdown the VAT on the receipt. There's no legal obligation on them to show the VAT on the receipt to the customer. Generally, retailers who sell to the public will include VAT in the price shown (dixons, Asda, Next, Boots, etc) whereas wholesalers (bookers, costco, makro, etc) who do not sell to the public (ie, they sell mainly to other traders) will not show the VAT and add it on top.

If Morrison's cordial is cheaper it is because it is cheaper, nothing to do with the VAT. Potatoes (indeed, any raw foods, meat, veg or fruit) does not have VAT on it anyway ('tis VAT free) so if the spuds in Aldi are dearer than other shops then Aldi are just selling dearer spuds (but probably better quality over Morrisons!) - VAT ain't involved at all.
