Pension paid as part of severance

Hi,

I am not clued up on all this but I am getting tingles that this doesn't feel right and I wondered if anyone could help.
My partner was medically signed off from his job and has accepted to go down the severance route as it works best for us. However, he told me yesterday that around half of his package is his pension from whilst he was with the company (7 odd years) and so he will not have a pension from them when he retires.
Surely this can't be right?
I'd get that part of the package would be the amount that would have gone into his pension for the 4 months or whatever it is he's being paid for, but to be that he now won't have any pension just feels wrong.

The package is still being arranged so I'd be grateful of any advice so we can make sure he isn't being diddled out of something.

Thanks

    Why not?

As you say, its a package.   The package would take things into account. If you start removing things from the package, then he package will be lower.

What type of pension is it?
How is the package being uplifted by the amount of the pension vs not including it?

I think you probably need to see the details of the package before you can really be sure what is being offered.

Doesn't make a lot of sense. If it's a DC pension then the money in it is his already so wouldn't be included as part of a severance package.

and if it is a DB scheme, it's not like they can force him to take it with him somehow - in fact as most of us on here know well, transferring a DB pension is not an easy thing to do at all!
