Camera Died - RIP - Updated - Canon users take note

I have had a Canon Powershot A70 for several years now and it has recently died. The image is all distorted - think it is beyond repair.

Want to upgrade. Only use it for taking pictures of the family and mini videos, but am wanting a better spec. I do like having a view finder, but seem to use the screen all the time! Want something small enough to go in a pocket, and to be fairly robust - kids like to fiddle! Like the look of Sony's and feel safe with Canon. Any suggestions? Many thanks and Happy New Year one and all!

  • Or even a Polaroid?
  • Anyone think it may be worth repairing then, does it cost a fortune ?

My husband has just been around the camera shops to ask about repairs as his got damaged over christmas. They charge a fee up front (£30 from Jessops, £150 from a local camera shop!) and then provide a quote. We looked on the pcadvisor forums, but the general consensus as that if it is more than a couple of years old, or under £200 don't bother repairing. My sister just bought the Olympus 820 which seems fantastic, but the Olympus 770 advertised on the telly (child and dog abusing camera then rinsing it under tap) gets good reviews. My BIL loves his Sony (100?), too.
However, in a do or die money saving effort, my husband took his apart this morning and managed to fix it. Hurray

powershot A570IS or 720IS is you don't mind AA batteries (rechargeables).

Ixus 950 or 960 if you want the slim and light, more expensive though.

Happened to look on another forum and some one was saying they were having problems with their canon camera, turns out their is a fault!
    Taken from Canon site -

Thank you for using one of our Canon products.
It has been found, that in rare case, some of the CCDs, used in Canon digital camera and digital video cameras, have a problem that causes abnormal image output.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Canon will offer free repairs where an error is caused by this malfunction.
Canon would like to advise our customers of the details of this issue and our policy for handling it.
    Problem details:
Among the CCDs used in the affected products, it has been confirmed that in extremely rare cases, under high-temperature/high-humidity environments, some of the internal wiring comes off.
If this defect occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD correctly when in shooting mode. This results in image abnormalities such as:
    • Images do not appear
    • Image colors are abnormal
    • Images appear distorted
These symptoms can be confirmed on the LCD monitor. Solution:
We kindly request users who have confirmed these symptoms to contact the nearest Canon Service Centre. Free repairs will be made for affected products in cases where it has been confirmed that the internal CCD wiring has come off.
