Help with book please!

I wonder if anyone could help me? A good while ago somebody said they had pre-ordered a really good money saving style book (not Martins; I already have both of those!). I checked the book out at the time, and it looked very interesting but, of course, I now cannot remember anything about it! Would anybody out there in MSE Land be able to help me please? Or, indeed, are there any books anyone can recommend?

Thank you, and a very Happy New Year to you all!

Thank you for that, but it's not ringing any bells. Amazon isn't recognising it, and I searched for the book in Amazon when I first read about it, so I don't think that's it. But thank you, anyway x

    Hi duchy,

If you have a look in The Complete Old Style Book Collection you might see something there that will jog your memory.

Okay, I think I may have found it. The title is (deep breath) 'How to feed your whole family a healthy balanced diet, with very little money and hardly any time, Even if you have a tiny kitchen, only three saucepans...-unless you count the garlic crusher...', and it's by Gill Holcombe.
I've just had a look at it on Amamzon (you can look at the inside pages), and unfortunately for me it's quite heavy on the meat recipes, and I'm a veggie. Might be good if you're not, though.
Can anyone recommend any other good money saving books?
Thank you for that, Pink-Winged, I'm going to have a look on there now.

An excellent veggie one is Rose Elliot's Cheap and Easy. Unfortunately is seems to be out of print and the second-hand copies are £14, you could try Abebooks. Her other early books -Simply Delicious and Not Just a Load of Old Lentils have low cost recipes in too.

If you are looking for something general I found the 'Tightwad' books very interesting. They are full of tips, but also they give an insight into the way a family embrace frugal living and achieve a great deal by doing so.

I didn't lift the way they live and 'do' it, I took the essence of what the books say and I use that. However, I found them a good read, very funny and they are inspiring.

Sadly, the books do not seem to be available at libraries in the UK. There is one book that encompasses the first two and all three are available cheaply on Amazon.

Frugal for Dummies I got out of the library, but it was very disappointing.

As for recipes, googling 'frugal recipes' and searching the forums will give you as much info as any of the books I've found. I keep them in a file on the pc, when I do a menu plan I go through them and save them so they are 'isolated' and easy to use. Delia has a frugal section and Allrecipes is good.

Some of the 'fundamentalist' sites are informative. Dig up 'Hillbilly Housewife' thread and look through that for sites.

Excellent books -all three are available as a single volume called The Complete Tightwad Gazette ;) I agree with Moanymoany about the way to use the book. Don't dismiss ideas because they are 'American' or not relevant to your situation, the philosophy of the book is to be creative with the resources available to you. I find it an inspiration everyday.

Just borrowed the new book people were wondering about from library"How to feed your whole family a healthy, balanced diet with very little money and hardly any time, even if you have a tiny kitchen, only three saucepans (onewith an ill-fitting lid) and no fancy gadgets - unless you count the garlic crusher" by Gill Holcombe.

Not for me personally - as I eat in a vegetarian, more unconventional sort of way.

But it IS definitely for OS'ers generally. Could have been written by Thriftlady (Thriftlady - Gill Holcombe isnt your realworld name by any chance?). For those who eat a fairly typical, meat inclusive diet - then BUY IT TODAY.

Hmmm.... thought to ponder on for the day....bet the author is Thriftlady? If she isnt...wonder if its Pinkwinged?...wonder if its..... (but I'll say hello to Gill anyway....because I'm betting you are an Old-Styler!)

Its just what it says on the tin - and includes costing (ie £25 for family for weekday dinners), mealplanning info, and genuinely doesnt use "fancy gadgets" and obscure ingredients.

If you do eat a more typical diet than me - you want this book.
