Some councils will give first six months free, then have to pay for the remaining six months,
others will give a 50% reduction for one year.
After that you have to pay in full, that is what I have learnt through personal experience.0 -
I believe all councils in England have to give the Class F exemption of nothing to pay until six months after probate is granted (or until the property is occupied or sold, whichever comes first) providing the deceased was the only occupier and sole owner of the property, as it is written into government legislation.Dave_T_UK said:Some councils will give first six months free, then have to pay for the remaining six months,

The Council Tax (Exempt Dwellings) Order 1992
I think there was also something proposed last year to exempt such properties from the empty / second home premium for a year after probate has been obtained, but not sure if that has been made law.
I'm not sure what the rules are for other parts of the UK.0 -
