Go and have a read over your initial post. It was as much judgement as it was a question (imo). It wasnt asking for more information to provide a more informed answer.
Yes, im for real. Ultimately the lady is in the position. It really does not matter if there was a plan or not. The options are still the same with regards to that.
More information (illness, affordability etc) might alter the options, but not whether there was a plan 20 years ago (in my opinion).
