Paid too much national insurance?

Hi there,

I’m new to the forum and looking for advice.

I had a letter last week to say I might’ve paid too much NI in 23/24. As I had more than one job.

I have a  full time job where my tax free allowance etc goes and I pay NI.

In my spare time I play sport and get paid in a payment at the end of the season. I have always paid. NI cat 1 on all of these payments.
E.g I got paid £15,000 in 22/23 over 2 separate payments and paid NI Cat 1 on both.
Would I be entitled to some sort of refund? I tried to call today but waited an hour and still in queue.
I’ve submitted a claim for last year as per the letter but I’m wondering if I should do past years now too.
thanks

It’s rare now to overpay NIC.

The most common occurrence is in your situation.

Simply put there is a maximum amount upon which you pay National Insurance at the highest rate. This is dealt with through payroll.

However if you had two jobs it could be that paying the higher rate on each meant that overall you paid the higher rate on a much higher amount than necessary.

It is likely that HMRC would pick this up as in this instance - nothing to stop you requesting a review though.

I paid too much NI each year as I had more than one job where I went over the upper earning limit - each time I had a letter like that, I filled in the form (it was basically - did you work for these employers?), sent it back and some months later there was a refund in my bank account - the last one was about £2.5k from (I think) 2014 - they do look back over time to check

The most common way to overpay these days. The other possibility are those in employment who also are self-employed - hospital consultants with a private practice, for example.

There is a maximum that one can pay by way of Class  1, Class 2 (when it existed) and Class 4 which involves an inordinately complicated calculation.

Again HMRC appear on top of this.

I was impressed when they contacted me telling me that they might owe me money
