My son has a part time job at Tesco - working approx 16hrs every weekend. He is at University during the week.
Starting this September, his fourth year at university takes the form of a one-year placement in Industry. He has secured this placement with a local company who is taking him on for a 52 week placement. This is paid - not much, around 18.5k I think, but for a placement it will cover his travel expenses and allow him to save some money towards his first flat deposit.

Tesco are a great employer. They allow employees to take up to one year sabbatical/personal leave, while keeping their job open for them on their return.

The thing is, during that one year, Tesco need to keep hold of his P45, meaning he can 't give it to the company he is doing a placement with. He doesn't want to "leave" tesco, as for job security he wants to hold on to that weekend role to return to in a years time.

Does that mean that he will go on "emergency tax" at the placement provider, and how would he go about getting that tax overpayment back?

Would a company be happy to keep him on emergency tax under these circumstances?

Has he  actually had a conversation with  his General Manager about this, or is he just reading aobut the sabbatical scheme  and assuming this is his only option ..

one option is he just fills in a new starter  checklist with the placement   which is factually correct ...

Agree, lots of reasons one might not have a P45, so use new starter checklist. Of course factually he should say he has another job, which means initially paying more tax than needed, BUT that can be sorted with a phone call to HMRC or playing with his personal tax account online.

The emergency tax code is 1257L.

What tax code is he on at Tesco?

Employers are used to using all sorts of different tax codes, 1257L is a very common one.

Once he has been paid by the new employer he can ask HMRC to allocate some of his tax code allowances to that employment instead of them all being allocated to Tesco.

Ultimately any tax overpaid in the short term will be refunded, either by his new employer or HMRC.
