Business Rates have doubled

Can anyone advise on what, if any, action I can take on my business rates bill which has more than doubled?
I was paying £161 per month until 3rd March then on April £383.70 was debited and I have a further 11 payments of £387.
I am in Islington, my rateable value is £15,500, my small business rate is £7,734.50 and my Retail Discount is 40%, which amounts to £4,640.70 business rates bill for 2025/26.

None, unless either the rateable value is wrong, or they have incorrectly charged you. Have you checked the figures are correct?

Have you had a discount like new occupier for a set period that has now ended? Perhaps call or email to ask why your bill has increased
  • The retail and hospitality discount has been reduced from 75% last year to 40% this year I think, hence why your bill has gone up.

From the figures you have provided the maths appears to be correct, so it must be the reduction in the R & H discount
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • Thank you very much for all your responses. I was unaware of the change regarding the R&H discount.

Those of not in retail never got a discount at all. Hopefully you budgeted for this when you started the business.
