    OP - did your wife work in the public sector at some point?  If so, she would have been automatically entered into their (contracted out) pension scheme.
    Ah, yes she did. She's been a care assistant most of her working life, mostly private learning disability and elderly care homes, but she did have a stint on an NHS hospital ward and also a while working for day services, which i think was an NHS or council thing.
    It's on our to do list to track down all her old pensions

    For yourself at April 2016 you had a starting amount of £119.08 made up of £83.51 basic and £35.57 additional pension which was old rules, your new scheme amount was £93.39.  You need another (0.2) 1 year to reach the max adding only £1.41.
    You wife had £113.52 made up of £91.46 basic and £22.06 additional pension which was old rules, her new scheme amount was a max of £102.28 so any COPE deduction would not affect the calculation. She needs another (1.5) 2 years to reach the max, the final year adding only £2.99.
